15th between wawona and up to west street. we are about to get the repair done. >> reporter: there are a couple of unique things about this break one you told me earlier was under the road and another thing about how large this pipe was. could you please talk to us about that? >> the brake happened under the road. the water pushed out but you don't see a major sinkhole there. it pushed out on the side i learned and flooded out into this intersection. all the dirt clogged the catch basins and storm drains so the water had nowhere to go. the 16" line is a distribution line so our residential lines are a lot smaller than that. that's why in this area no one is impacted on the water service. that's one positive note out of this. but we want to make sure we clean up the homes in the area and also get the water line repaired. >> reporter: thank you, tyrone, for joining us. i know you have a lot of work ahead of you. we appreciate this and the work you're doing for us. there will be a major clean-up, a digup of the area in a few moments but we'll be sure to update you as we get more

information. reporting live from san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> this affects a lot of people in the neighborhood. are they saying anything? have you talked to them this morning? >> reporter: yes, i did speak with one neighbor just a few moments ago who says his basement has been flooded and about 2 to 3 feet of water. he was awoken when he heard a lot of these car alarms and all this noise and saw that water pool up in this area. he is trying to pump it out. >> cate, do you know how quickly the water came and went away? >> i'm not sure on how fast this happened. but it appears from what i have heard from neighbors and officials, it seems this happened quickly. with the water main break it's hard to tell. i'm not sure how quickly it all pooled up in the area but as you can see we are at the foot of it and that's why it collected right around here at this intersection. >> certainly a big mess for crews to clean up. cate caugiran live in san

francisco, thank you. 5:03. we are getting new information about what may have led to two deadly police shootings down in santa cruz. two plainclothes police detectives shot to death on duty and the suspect was killed in a shootout with other police officers. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec reports from santa cruz. >> reporter: behind me is that scene the latter scene that you mentioned where the suspect was shot on doyle street. santa cruz sheriff's officers are investigating this and it could take days or even weeks to wrap up this investigation. but we do know the basics right now. this is the man officers say shot and killed two santa cruz detectives yesterday afternoon. 35-year-old jeremy goulet who lived in santa cruz some say worked at a harbor coffee shop,

these are the fallen officers, sergeant loran butch baker and detective elizabeth butler. investigators say the officers were talking outside of his home on branciforte. they were there for a investigation when goulet opened fire killing them both. and goulet then took off. officers caught up with him on nearby doyle street and they say he shot first at them, they returned fire and goulet was shot dead. >> kind of chaotic. people didn't know what was happening. >> i started walking down the street and the gunfire started in front of me about 15 feet in front of me so i hid behind my car and ran. >> reporter: very scary scene for people living and working around this area. to be sure there weren't suspects still on the loose s.w.a.t. officers broke down doors in the neighborhood and four schools were locked down. once they reopen doyle street things should be back to harm in million in downtown santa cruz. there is a memorial at the

santa cruz police department. live in santa cruz, anne makove kpix 5. >> a suspect friend said what? >> recently the suspect goulet had been depressed even suicidal and said something along the lines that he was going to go down, he was going to go down hard. we also know that goulet had an arrest on friday night for disorderly conduct. >> anne makovec live or for us in santa cruz, thank you. shooting suspect jeremy goulet does have a criminal record as ann said. he was arrested in portland after a man caught him peeping through a window as his girlfriend was taking a shower. goulet's gun went off during a struggle and the boyfriend bit off part of goulet's ear. goulet was put on probation but decided to serve two years in jail because he couldn't get along with his probation officer. the santa cruz police chief says his department is like family. the chief was emotional as he tanked about the two slain

detectives. one of the victims was detective elizabeth butler. >> elizabeth is a 10-year veteran of the santa cruz police department currently assigned to investigations. she leaves behind her partner peter and her two young boys. >> also killed was detective sergeant loran butch baker with the santa cruz police department for 28 years. he leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son, who also works for santa cruz police department. the other big story this morning pope benedict xvi spoke to thousands this morning as he made his final public appearance in st. peter's square as the pope. vinita nair joins us now live from the vatican with more on this sendoff to retirement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're a full nine hours later near rome so sort of good afternoon here. but it was a very exciting day here in rome. about 150,000 people packed

into st. peter's square and it was an emotional farewell to the pope. pope benedict rode through the popemobile for the last time. he kissed babies and waved to tens of thousands who gathered to see him. the 85-year-old delivered his final message after serving nearly 8 years as pontiff. pope benedict told the crowd he will keep the faithful in his prayers and has great trust in the future of the church. tomorrow he will become the first pope to abdicate in 600 years. this group of pilgrims from the pope's home country of germany took an overnight bus to rome. he says, it's a historic event naturally we want to be part of it. vatican officials say even in his retirement, pope benedict will be known as emeritus pope. so when a new pope is elected there will be two popes living just a few yards away from each other here in vatican city. critics suggest having two popes both with the same key aides serving them is going to

cause conflict but the vatican insists while the situation is unique, no trouble will arise. pope benedict will be called your holiness and will continue to wear a white robe. but he is trading his famous red shoes for a brown pair he received on a trip to mexico. >> when the pope was asked what he wanted to wear, he told, i want the shoes from leone in mexico. >> reporter: pope benedict asked the faithful to pray for the cardinals who will choose his successor. 115 cardinals under the age of 80 will vote in a secret election early next month. certainly one of the questions people here in rome have been asking are what exactly will this pope do now that he is in retirement? the pope has said he wants too rededicate himself to prayer and meditation. he basically says we will not see him after he abdicates tomorrow. >> can you tell us, what is it an emotional address his last sermon today to all the people

one car is buried. >> at least a dozen homes are affected by this water main break on 15th and wawona. this is in the city's west portal neighborhood. and that's where we find kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran. and cate, you talked to one of the neighbors who saw his basement flooded. >> reporter: yeah. it was an unfortunate thing for that neighbor who just moved to this neighborhood two weeks ago. so it's not the welcome he was expecting. utility workers are trying to continue the clean-up effort that's under way. they are digging into the road to get to the heart of that break and asatisfies what damage has been done. cars were halfway submerge in the flood. one showed how bad the damage was. the break happened around 3:00 this morning. it happened under the roadway. earlier we got reports of a

sinkhole forming and that was a concern for utility crews but it appears the break formed a crack off to the side of a sidewalk. it created a lake at wawona and for a dozen neighbors it gathered inside their homes. >> our house is under 3 feet of water. we're grabbing anything we could. we just moved in two weeks ag. >> reporter: i asked the department why there was so much water here and the public information officer told me that most water main lines are about 6 to 8 inches but this line was 16" double that size, why so much water pooled in the area. roads will be shut down in this part of the neighborhood for the day as workers try to repair the damage. i have some good news for

people here in the area. even though or despite the water main break it hasn't affected any utilities in the area. so people should still have running water this morning. reporting live in san francisco's west portal neighborhood, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> thank you. you may recall just last week, a broken water main in the city's north beach neighborhood sent water shooting down mason and filbert streets. >> pse crews had to dig up the road and cable cars were rerouted. >> it's a problem with the old infrastructure. >> but at least the crews have the experience to get it done and it looks like a big mess on their hands this morning, as well. in other news a memorial is growing in honor of the two santa cruz police detectives that were killed in the line of duty. >> they were responding to a call when they were shot and killed yesterday afternoon. a short time later and a few blocks away, the suspect was killed in a shootout with other police officers. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is down in santa cruz with developing news about what may

secretary of defense at the pentagon. u.s. senator chuck hagel has just been sworn in as the new secretary of defense at the pentagon. the bitter seven-week fight over his nomination ended yesterday as the senate voted 58-41 to confirm him. hagel is a republican, but he got the votes of only 4 republican senators. many in the gop feel he is hostile towards israel and a little too soft on iran.

[ laughter ] >> yes. good for him. he has had a busy four years. >> not anytime soon. somebody who is very busy this morning is elizabeth, still tracking that water main break in san francisco. >> yeah. what we have confirmed is that 15th and wawona that intersection is definitely shut down. you have to see these pictures from the scene. it's pretty incredible stuff, cars completely submerged in five feet of water. this is a huge water main break. i haven't seen anything like this. look at that car there in all that water. so obviously the roads are not passible. this is in san francisco's west portal neighborhood. it sounds like right now you can get by using west portal or pass north along vicente street. this is a residential area not hugely traveled but if you live in this area, obviously, it is a big problem. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far no metering lights some very slight delays in a couple

of the cash lanes. to the maps, showing you the right along westbound 580 flying through the altamont pass brake lights from 205 out of tracy to grant line road and it continues through to the dublin interchange. drive time in the yellow up to 23 minutes between the altamont pass and 680. roads in the east bay 65 miles per hour now if you are traveling through berkeley. here's a live look approaching ashby avenue. that's traffic. here's lawrence. >> a lot of sunshine coming our way and the unseasonably warm temperatures likely to continue but if you are heading out right now, it's actually freezing in some of the valleys. temperatures there taking a major dip overnight with mostly clear skies, well down into the 30s. we have 40s inside the bay. and out along the coastline. this afternoon, we're all enjoying some sunshine and some high clouds and the temperatures going to soar well into the 60s and maybe a couple of low 70s the warmest spots inland. you will see 60s inside the bay

and 60s, mostly sunny skies, at the coastline. a flat ridge across the pacific, we'll occasionally see high clouds from time to time but that will be the worst of it. otherwise, these temperatures will stay very mild and running above average. sfo a clear start no delays expected there, 60 by the afternoon. across the country a different story, dry and 72 at houston, 39 chilly dry into denver. snow in chicago and showers in new york. temperatures around the bay area today looking good. 69 degrees in morgan hill. about 68 in san jose. and 68 in sunnyvale. temperatures in the upper 60s maybe even a couple of low 70s wouldn't be surprised inland. inside the bay doesn't get much nicer than this time of year, 60s and lots of sunshine. and it looks like beautiful weather maybe even some mid-70s toward friday. the weekend, some changes, a slight chance of a couple of

bucks the trend dropping more than 1%. fed chair ben bernanke's promise of continued aid and a jump in home sales sparked a rally on wall street. after dropping more than 200 points on monday, the dow soared 115 points on tuesday while the nasdaq rose 13 points. jpmorgan chase says it is cutting 19,000 jobs over the next 2 years. the cuts will mostly come from the consumer banking and mortgage division. jpmorgan is just the latest big bank to shrink its staff. bank of america, citigroup, morgan stanley and goldman sachs all trimmed jobs in 2012. and after a short break, gas prices are on the rise again. aaa says the average cost for a gallon of regular nationwide is now $3.78. that is a 43-cent increase in the last month. bad news, guys. california pays the most at $4.24 a gallon. so very painful to fill up, i'm sure. >> not only california but the bay area is always the most
